Overview
Background
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on more than 3,500 years of Chinese medical practice that includes various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping therapy, qua sha, massage, bonesetter, exercise and dietary therapy. The term ‘nutraceutical’ was coined by Stephen L. DeFelice MD in 1989. A nutraceutical is defined as any substance that is a food or part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Examples are natural foods, including antioxidants, dietary supplements, fortified dairy products, citrus fruits, vitamins, minerals, herbals, milk and cereals.
